30 YEARS OF ASEAN - 1997

Special  Stamps Issuance

The post-World War II period saw the formation of a number of aggrupations among the developing countries in Asia, Africa and latin America. Of those regional groupings, ASEAN (Associations of South-East Asian Nations) stands out today as one of the most dynamic and successful, having chalked an impressive record of rapid and sustained economic, growth, regional stability and security, and close collaboration in scientific, technological and socio-cultural endeavours.

ASEAN was founded on August 8, 1967 with the signing of the historic Bangkok Declarations by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined the group in 1984 and Vietnam in 1995. It has been an ASEAN dream to bring into the fold all the 10 countries in the region forming what so-called ASEAN-10. However, in its 30th anniversary, the dream has not been fulfilled. ASEAN only admits two of the CLM countries as new members, namely Laos and Myanmar, whereas Cambodia's admission is postponed in the last days due to the political turmoil at home.

The ASEAN region is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, evidenced by a high rate of at an annual average about 7 percent during the past three decades. The region offers a potentially large market for business and investment opportunities. The combined population of the region reaches nearly 500 million, 106 million bigger than NAFTA and 113 million bigger than EU-15.

The 30th anniversary of ASEAN is also marked with the launching of the new flag and logo. They represent the vision of ASEAN-10 as  stable, peaceful, united and dynamic region. The colors -- blue, red, white and yellow -- represent the main colors of the flags of all the ASEAN countries.

The new logo appears on the "30 Years of ASEAN" stamp series which is portraying cooperation in the region. The issuance of the stamp series will be followed by the ASEAN Album to be issued in December.
