Special  Stamps Issuance

At dawn April 28, 1996, Indonesia lost one of its best women. The First Lady passed away aged 72, on the very special Moslem Holiday Idul Adha 10 Dzulhijjah, when 2.5 million Moslems were participating Wukuf (the ceremony of gathering on the field of Arafah during the hajj) and hundreds of millions were praying and exclaiming Takbir (reciting Allahu Akbar) and praising Tahmid (Alhamdulillah). Suddenly Indonesia's land was covered by sorrow and condolences. Ibu Tien, The First Lady is survived by six children and several grandchildren.

Ibu Tien Soeharto was born in Surakarta on August 23, 1923 as a descendant of Javanese royalty known as Mangkunegaran. She was  the second of nine children of Kanjeng Raden Mas Tumenggung Soemoharyomo and Hatmanti.

Ibu Tien grew up during the time of the nation's struggle for independence as a student in a Dutch school Hollands Inlandche School (HIS). In her teenage years she was a member of the Girl Scout Movement. In 1944 she was an employee of the Surakarta Cultural Centre, an activist for Indonesian Women's Youth in 1945 and the next year became a member of the Indonesian Women's Legion.  

It was around this time she met Lt. Col. Soeharto, who was then 26 years of age. They married on December 26, 1947 in Surakarta, a few days before Soeharto had to rejoin his battalion in Yogyakarta. As the wife of a soldier, Ibu Tien h garad to move from one place to another. She had lived in Yogyakarta, Semarang and Ujung Pandang. 

 Her community and social work increased after Soeharto assumed the presidency in 1967. She founded or became a leader of various women's organizations such as Persit Kartika Chandra Kirana, Ibu Ampera, Dharma Pertiwi and Dharma Wanita. She was involved in numerous charity foundations, primarily Yayasan Harapan Kita  (Our Hope Foundation) and Gotong Royong Humanitarian Funds. She was also a patron of a number of foundations and orphanages as well as an organization which assists children with dissabilities.

One of her monumental works is the Beautiful Indonesia Miniature Park (Taman Mini Indonesia Indah or TMII) which reflects all the cultures and traditions that exist in Indonesia. Completed on April 20, 1975 it is one of the nation's most popular recreation sites and attracts tourist both domestic and worldwide. Other works of hers are The Purna Bhakti Pertiwi Museum in Jakarta, which symbolizes her love and loyality to her husband, and Mekar Sari Fruit Garden in Cileungsi, Bogor as a token of her love to the diversity of Indonesian fruit. That is the place she visited with her grandchildren one day before her death. among philatelist, Ibu Tien also has special place. It was she who thought to build the Indonesian Stamp Museum in TMII completed in 1983.

During her life she received a number of medals and honors including the Mahaputra award, the highest honor conferred upon the nation's best. Other awards are the Bintang Budaya Parama Dharma Medal (1992) awarded for her role in cultivating Indonesian culture, The Adhikarya Wanadya Tama award (1994) recognizing for her work for Indonesian women, The Bintang Gerilya (1987) and The Satyalancana kebaktian Sosial (1971). She also received foreign honors such as The Kroon Orde from the Dutch government (1970), First Class Order of the Precious Crown from Japan (1988) and Special Order of the Grand Cross from Germany (1970).

For the outstanding service she gave this country, the House of Representatives has proposed that the government confer upon her the title of National Heroine. And as a token of the nation's gratitude for her dedication, the Directorate General of Post and Telecommunictions issued a stamp on August 5, 1996, this date being the 100th of her death.
